What is the best advice for getting you house organized for back to school?

I have a space designated for back packs. The kids put all their stuff there, so when it is time to go to the bus they have everything together. On weekends they keep their backpacks in their closets in their room, but during the week they are out and ready to go!

For homework, I have a set of plastic drawers with pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, paper, etc. Basically whatever they need to do their homework is in one place so we don't have to look all over for a ruler or a sharpened pencil.

I also like to organize my refrigerator and pantry. My kids pack their lunches most of the time, so I like to make sure I am stocked up with all their lunch box favorites. What is the best advice for getting you house organized for back to school?
Advise is great on organizing but you have to do what's going to work best for you. Take suggestions for what they are, something that has worked for someone else, they may not work for you. But this is great because it's like brainstorming. Someone says something and it gives you a thought of how you could do it. Go with that thought.

That said, some ideas:

1) each kid should have their own cubby, a place for them to unload after school. Backpacks, shoes, coats, whatever.

2) before bedtime ask your kids to make sure their bag is packed for in the morning, like before bath time or what ever. This is one less thing to do in the morning.

3) If you have older kids, have them make their own lunches. I liked having lunchmeat and cheese in one baggie and my bread in another, then at lunch I made my sandwich (I hate soggy sandwiches). You can prep the baggies ahead of time, like when you get home from the store.

4) Someone else mentioned the drawers for everything. To up that idea a little make sure kids have a work space to do their homework where they can work uninterupted. don't let kids do homework in front of the TV. tell them it will get done faster if they just concentrate on it. It's a good idea for kids to have their own workspace so if they can have a desk in their room all that much better. It's private and personal.

5) If you show good organizing habits to your kids they are more likely to pick them up and then their lives can be more successful because they are more organized and better prepared for it.

Good luck! I hope I've got your wheels turning.
