Do you really have to tie off and break the yarn when you change colour and then tie it on again when you re-start? Seems very fiddly. I have knitted many things before but this will be my first attempt at a Fairisle pattern. Do you have any tips?Do you have any advice/techniques for knitting a fairisle pattern?
Learn how to weave the colours not in use.On the knit row,if you only have one other colour, hold it on top of your LEFThand finger, put the righthand needle in the stitch as usual, then under the other colour and knit them BOTH off (the second colour does not pass through the stitch). Do this about every 3 or 4 stitches and you will find your work stays flexible and neat. A bit difficult to describe, but well worth learning. When you need the other colour, either switch them over for more than 4 stitches (the first colour is then woven in as before) , or just hook it through with the righthand needle if it's only for one or two stitches. If you have more than one colour, hold them all as above and select as required. The purl side is worked in exactly the same way.
To carry a colour up the side, just slip the righthand needle under it for the first stitch only, as above.
Don't bother with bobbins, cutting off or any newfangled ideas - this is the way it SHOULD be done and is really easy once you've learned it.
Good luck - I'm now 82 years old, and in my teens I used to knit my future husband a new fair-isle pullover every week for a few months. It used to be a talking point in his office on a Monday morning!
